June 7, 2010

The First Meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to Prepare a Global Legally Binding Instrument on Mercury (INC 1) was held from 7-11 June 2010 in Stockholm, Sweden. The meeting was attended by over 400 participants, representing governments, UN agencies, and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Anna Tilman, board member of IICPH, was selected to be part of the Canadian delegation to INC 1 as representing Canadian Environmental NGOs.

Delegates engaged in discussions on preliminary views on key elements of a global mercury treaty. The topics included objectives of the treaty and its structure; capacity-building and technical and financial assistance; compliance; supply and demand; international trade, waste; environmentally sound storage; atmospheric emissions of mercury; awareness-raising and information exchange.

INC 1 is the first of five meetings on negotiating a treaty which is to culminate in 2013.
