An Afternoon with Rosalie Bertell

Keywords

December 1, 2008

The excitement in McClure Hall was palpable as they came to honour the jewel in the environmental firmament, our much loved Sister Rosalie Bertell on the occasion of her Jubilee Year as a Grey Nun of The Sacred Heart. Although we do think of Rosalie more as a scientist, researcher and epidemiologist, dear friend and guiding light, we are also aware of the spiritual roots that are a large part of who she is. It was a great pleasure to see so many familiar faces from over the years, come to honour her:those who’s work has been influenced by Rosalie, as well of those who had only heard or read of her work. The afternoon began with a consecration of the gathering by Erin Chiblow, of the Blind River Mississauga Nation. Erin also sang a beautiful song of her composition, about the role of women in the preservation of the Earth.

One of the IICPH’s founders, Professor Emerita Ursula Franklin, Quaker and member of Voice of Women, praised and thanked Rosalie. David Martin of Greenpeace Canada, who works on nuclear issues, noted that Rosalie has been his inspiration for many years. Donna Dillman, campaigner and hunger striker against uranium mining, spoke of her commitment. Others who spoke were Dorothy Goldin Rosenberg for Women’s Healthy Environments Network, Brennain Lloyd of Northwatch, Janis Alton for Voice of Women, Ziggy Kleinau of Citizens For Renewable Energy, and journalist Suzanne Elston. Shirley Farlinger, who did most of the organizing, hosted the event. Marion Odell thanked Rosalie, introduced the board members and invited people to see our displays and take pamphlets. Board member Rosemarie White produced a set of illustrations concerning the work of Dr. Bertell, while at the back of the hall, there were information boards on various aspects of the work of IICPH. President Jean Rajotte noted the need for support for IICPH to continue and enhance our work.

Rosalie preached the sermon at Bloor Street United Church on Sunday. Throughout, Rosalie was accompanied by her sister Mary. The two joined a group for dinner and went on to visit the theatre at Niagara-on the-Lake the following day.
