IICPH project manager Willi Nolan at the Point Lepreau Decommissioning Caucus press conference, Fredericton, 1 September 2010

Fredericton, September 1, 2010 – On Wednesday, September 1st, 2010, a coalition of groups (including, amongst others: Concerned Citizens of Saint John, Conservation Council of New Brunswick, Fundy Baykeeper, International Institute of Concern for Public Health, People Against Nuclear Energy, Sierra Club of Canada Atlantic Chapter) released important information lacking in the nuclear debate around Point Lepreau. The information will address three myths: that nuclear power is clean, cheap, and needed.

In 2002, the New Brunswick Public Utilities Board concluded that refurbishing Point Lepreau “is not in the public interest” and there would be “no significant economic advantage” for the province.

Disregarding this disapproval, NB Power and the government of New Brunswick went ahead with the refurbishment. Spending has continued unrestrained and the New Brunswick public has been fed a great deal of misinformation.

This Caucus came together after repeatedly witnessing public officials broadcasting myths about nuclear energy. The group identified three common myths and gathered evidence to set the public record straight – nuclear energy is not clean, not cheap, and is not needed in New Brunswick.

It is extremely important that the voting public receives accurate information during an election period. We hope to counter the unrealistic information provided by some other sources. With facts in hand, the parties can engage in informed debate and offer practical solutions to the problems of Point Lepreau.
