The 2002 Eco Hero Award was awarded to Dr. Rosalie Bertell in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding contributions to scientific research, public awareness, and non-violent action on environmental issues. The presenter, CEO Mark Haslam noted that Dr. Bertell, a Grey Nun and scientist, has worked in the field of environmental health for over three decades, has lead scientific invertigations into the tragedies of Bhopal and Chernobyl, and works by preference on behalf of indigenous peoples and citizen groups most adversely affected by militarism and pollution.
